Universal Newborn Hearing Screening

The EAR Foundation of Arizona advocates for the importance of hearing screenings of all newborns.

When newborns are screened and are found to have hearing losses, early treatment has been found to make a profound difference.

The EAR Foundation of Arizona provides free screening equipment, training, consultation and technical assistance to many hospitals in Arizona. As a result of this program, managed by an audiologist, approximately 98% of all newborn infants are now screened for potential hearing losses. However, our work is far from complete: new legislation, re-training and continuing education, quality standards development, data tracking protocols & data reporting mechanisms are needed and require implementation by professionals.

This program has been supported by grants from St. Luke's Health Initiatives, Phoenix.
